Google Glass' Potential Impact On Eyewear and Photography

Google recently gave out several finished versions of the product Goggle Glass to tech-savvy developers to review, but mainly to start developing for the platform. Google knows that Glass is only the platform. The revolution is less in the product itself and more in the potential impact it can have on related industries such as eyewear and photography.

Glass allows users to take pictures with voice commands, making it possible to capture moments that might otherwise be missed. It’s even possible to use an app that lets you wink to take photos. People worry that they may be photographed without their knowledge. For decades people have been photographed without knowing about it, but rarely in close proximity, and never through the mere wink of an eye.

"'Google Glass may allow users to do amazing things, but it does not abolish the limits on the human ability to pay attention," the Daily Mail reported as a quote from the NY Times. "Glass may inadvertently disrupt a crucial cognitive capacity, with potentially dangerous consequences.”

Many cafes in the United States have been concerned over similar issues. There are also personal concerns for user and non-user privacy. Cafe managers didn't want their patrons worried about being privately photographed or videotaped by someone wearing Google Glass. As a result, multiple cafe owners have banned the technology from being allowed on their property.

The designer eyewear community will no doubt get involved with the design element of Google Glass at some point if the platform gains popularity. Many of the problems proposed by Glass' critics could potentially be solved b y new design ideas for Google Glass frames.

Eyewear brands could end up taking on some of the design challenges in Google Glass. Stanton Optical reviews often point to the need among consumers for stylish frames, and this is something that will undoubtedly stand in the way of Google for now. In the future, if Glass is successful, Google will surely offer more stylish options.

The eyewear industry has brought us lens features such as high definition, glare prevention, transition lenses, UV protection, and bifocals. You can imagine a future where Google Glass might be able to feed data to the lenses and bring more sophisticated technologies to improve our vision. At the moment, glasses must be stateless and powerless, but this could change with the birth of Google Glass.
